Spanish Music: Malgueña and Flamenco

by admin | August 2nd, 2008

One of the joys in traveling is experiencing the cultural uniqueness of the countries and cities you visit. The Costa Del Sol regional Malagueña and Flamenco music for me is one of those experiences. I became a fan of the music last year when I visited the area.

Malagueñas are one of the traditional styles of flamenco, derived from earlier types of fandango, a fact most of you might not want to know, but part of my post anyway.

The name of the music derives from the area in which it was developed, Málaga, Spain. Unlike the flamenco, the malagueña music is not normally used for dance.

The malagueña music is less well known than flamenco outside of Spain mainly because flamenco is associated with the accompanying dances.

This is not a lesson on Spanish music. Of course, who knows; I might try to do that later.

The stacatto chant-like singing that oftentimes accompanies the music is reminiscent of music you might here across the Mediterranean Sea on the Northern coast of Africa. Spain was occupied by the Moorish culture for six to seven centuries and left a strong mark on the architecture and music of Spain, particularly the Southern part of Spain, along the Costa Del Sol.

I have just finished and published a new Squidoo Lens on Malagueña and Flamenco Music. It complements the others I have already done on Spain. On that site you will find several YouTube videos of performances by Spanish musicians José Feliciano, Carlos Montoya, and our own country musician, Roy Clark of “Yee Haw” fame.

You can view the YouTube videos directly on the Squidoo site linked above, OR for a little sample, try out the video below. (Note: The previous Carlos Montoya Video that I included Is No Longer Available on YouTube).

I am replacing it with one by Jose Feliciano. One of the most famous musicians to play Malaguena music was the Puerto Rican musician, Jose Feliciano.

I hope you enjoy the music as much as I do!
